During this timeframe, ocean liners grew rapidly in size from 10,000 GRT to over 80,000 GRT, and evolved into efficient modes of transportation establishing regular weekly runs across an unpredictable North Atlantic.
Warships evolved into potent fighting vessels carrying heavier armament and ever thicker armor. During WWII, however, these offensive and defensive capabilities were overcome by the airplane, thrusting the aircraft carrier to the forefront while consigning the heavily armored warship to the scrap heap of history.
